Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden, can be reached by air, train, bus or boat.
The closest bigger airports are Arlanda near Stockholm (4 hrs by train from Gothenburg) and Kastrup near Copenhagen in Denmark (ca 4 hrs by train from Gothenburg). Timetables and prices for trains between these two airports and Gothenburg are found through SJ.
The City of Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by the King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. It is situated at the mouth of Göta Älv river, which crosses the city, and is the largest sea port of Sweden as well as of the Nordic countries. Historically the economy of Gothenburg had a maritime orientation and significant Dutch and Scottish influences remain. There are about 500 000 inhabitants in the city and about 900 000 in the greater metropolitan area. Current general information for visitors, events, sights and related matters are collected at the city's official homepage Goteborg.com
The language of Gothenburg is Swedish but almost everyone speaks English and is used to foreigners knowing only English.
The currency used throughout is the Swedish crown (colloquially krona sg., kronor pl.), abbreviated SEK officially and kr[onor] colloquially. In May 2011, the exchange rates were 1 GBP = 10.2132 SEK, 1 USD = 6.2331 SEK and 1 Euro = 8.9955 SEK.
