Språkbanken is working actively to develop a language technology infrastructure. At present, this encompasses the following components:

• lexical infrastructure,
• corpus infrastructure, and
• metadata.

At the moment, building infrastructure for lexical resources and corpora means harmonizing and standardizing as many free language resources as possible, and making them available to the research community. We also develop tools to explore these resources, for example SBLEX for lexical resources and Korp for corpora. Additionally, the goal is that all of these resources should be well described in a metadata repository, which follows the standards of the field.

We consider openness our mission, a philosophical stance which we try to apply as far as possible. We think that research should be carried out openly, to allow scrutinization and cooperation. A part of this openness is to use open standards and licenses, and to use and create open source tools. Although all older resources cannot be freely available, due to restrictive licenses, we strive to collect more resources which are larger and free for use. Our goal is to support language research and development of language technology applications in Sweden and the world.
