Language Pairs

In order to make PEDANT useful for the immediate needs of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities our collection aims at covering as many languages as possible, even though not all languages will be represented in all domains as we describe them in section 3.3 below. The pairs Swedish-English, Swedish-French and Swedish-German will receive thorough attention, since they will be the focus of translation program and as such are included in all domains.

Some texts, such as the book ``Information about Sweden'' (Sverigeinformation), are available in several languages. It has been translated into Rumanian, Serbo-Croatian, Polish, Turkish, Spanish, Arabic and Hungarian as well as the languages mentioned above. Such a text, translated from the same source into several languages, will serve as a good basis for comparing translation into several languages.

In the political domain, mostly texts from the European Union, we find documents in all of the current official languages such as Portugese, Greek, Finnish and Italian. It might be difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain the ``original texts'' since all texts are ``official'' and therefore the direction of translation can be a delicate matter.

For all languages there is a problem finding relevant texts translated from Swedish into the other languages. It is therefore unavoidable that there will be a considerably higher percentage of texts translated into Swedish. This is less of a problem with financial texts than literature, since there are many international companies in Sweden and they tend to produce quarterly and annual reports in Swedish and English. Translations of these reports to other languages than English are rare.
