Bakgrund
Projektet samlar material som tidigare inte har kunnat studeras i sin helhet. Det är relevant kanske främst för samhällsvetare (ekonomhistoriker, historiker) och humanister (språkvetare, litteraturvetare), men skulle även kunna användas exempelvis för medicinska historiska studier om innehållet i källorna.
Projektbeskrivning
I detta projekt ska vi studera levnadsvillkoren för den förslavade befolkningen i 1800-talets Förenta stater med hjälp av vittnesmål, "slavnarrativ" - från de förslavade själva. "Slavnarrativ" är självbiografiska texter av, eller intervjuer med, tidigare förslavade individer, där de beskriver sitt liv under eller efter slaveriet. Vi känner till flera tusen narrativ, spridda över flera olika källmaterial.
Svårigheterna med att studera en så stor stor mängd data med traditionella historiemetoder (t.ex. kvalitativ närläsning av källorna) har gjort att de flesta historiker har avstått från att konsultera mer än en bråkdel av alla dessa källor. Med korpuslingvistisk teknik kan vi nu åtgärda detta, i syfte att dels själva analysera materialet och göra korpus-stödda diskursanalyser, dels öppna materialet för vem som helst som vill studera det i sin helhet.

Voices of the enslaved: corpus-based discourse analysis of historical slave narratives
Living standards is a key topic in economic-historical research. Enslaved individuals have been omitted from most such research, for lack of records conventionally used for studying the topic. We aim to study how enslaved individuals in 19th century United States described their living standards, using a large body of records of “slave narratives” – autobiographical texts by or interviews with formerly enslaved individuals. Estimates from previous research suggest that around 5,000 “slave narratives” exist in various collections of historical records. These records will be assembled into an annotated digital corpus. The analysis of the corpus will consist of a machine-assisted and researcher-driven corpus linguistic discourse analysis of the narratives, focusing upon the socio-economic factors at the heart of the project. We aim to study how they described their material living standards (possession of material objects) and their non-material living conditions (trauma of coercion and violence). We will analyze if this was influenced by different social, cultural or geographical factors, and whether it changed over time – most importantly following emancipation from slavery. The project will be undertaken by Klas Rönnbäck (economic history), Irene Elmerot (corpus linguistics) and Leif-Jöran Olsson (language technology), partly in cooperation with Morgan State University (Baltimore, USA) and a broader reference group of leading international scholars.
Once constructed, we will make the corpus of these narratives freely available and reusable for other future research projects. This is useful for many different disciplines, including historical and economic historical research, but also the English language and linguistics in historical and economic historical research, but also the English language and linguistics in general, since our corpus is based on texts containing very specific sociolects and semi-spoken language.
