title = {Leveraging ChatGPT for language learning: A study on foreign teachers’ Swedish acquisition.},
abstract = { This study explores Generative AI (GAI) tools, such as ChatGPT and Copilot, as innovative aids in teaching Swedish to foreign-trained educators, offering insights into both language learning and educational technology. Our primary objective is to leverage ChatGPT’s ability to provide personalized feedback, supporting students in targeting specific areas in their language development. The study explores: (1) students' effectiveness and precision in formulating questions to ChatGPT 3.5; (2) cognitive demands of using ChatGPT related to learners' (meta)linguistic and computer skills; and (3) student attitudes toward ChatGPT’s usability for developing Swedish and academic language. The present research applies a theory triangulation approach, integrating frameworks from Interaction Theory (Gass & Mackey 2014), the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) (Liu & Ma, 2024), and Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) (Sweller et al., 2011), to provide a multidimensional analysis of AI's role in enhancing linguistic proficiency. A mixed-methods approach was used to assess ChatGPT’s impact, focusing on cognitive load, language acquisition, and student attitudes. The study involved 16 foreign-trained teachers in a language course in Sweden. Data was collected using questionnaires, reported assignments and submitted logs.
