title = {Sorry, shit and wow: a case study of the handling of interjections in three Nordic monolingual dictionaries},
abstract = {This paper discusses a qualitative and, to some extent, comparative metalexicographical case study on interjections, with an English origin, in three Nordic monolingual dictionaries. In short, the study answers the following research questions: (1) How are three well-established interjections handled in The Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy (SO) compared to corresponding entries in a Danish and a Norwegian dictionary and how can the SO descriptions be developed?; (2) How can three less established interjections be analyzed and described in an updated version of the SO? The point
of departure for answering the research questions is information types that are common
in dictionary entries. Furthermore, the use of interjections in corpora and text collections
for Swedish are crucial for the investigation. The study shows that interjections as a category imply several challenges for lexicographers. Finally, some suggestions are presented
concerning the way in which the description of interjections in the SO may be developed},

abstract = {We present the DURel tool implementing the annotation of semantic proximity between word uses into an online, open source interface. The tool supports standardized human annotation as well as computational annotation, building on recent advances with Word-in-Context models. Annotator judgments are clustered with automatic graph clustering techniques and visualized for analysis. This allows to measure word senses with simple and intuitive micro-task judgments between use pairs, requiring minimal preparation efforts. The tool offers additional functionalities to compare the agreement between annotators to guarantee the inter-subjectivity of the obtained judgments and to calculate summary statistics over the annotated data giving insights into sense frequency distributions, semantic variation or changes of senses over time.},

title = {Time to Say Goodbye Revisited – On the Exclusion of Headwords from the Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL)},
abstract = { In the revision process of dictionaries, adding new headwords or new senses to already existing headwords is what typically receives the most attention. In this article, we bring into focus the intriguing dilemma of exclusion of headwords from the Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL), which is still published in print versions. In the e-dictionary-era, removing headwords may seem questionable. SAOL is, however, a contemporary dictionary which aims to reflect present-day Swedish. In order to keep the lemma list up to date, new headwords are added and obsolete words are removed. The editors of SAOL have practised lemma exclusion in connection with the revisions of new editions for almost 150 years. In this paper, we present SAOL and argue that lemma exclusion is crucial to SAOL’s aim and target group. We also present our most recent corpus material, methods and tools included in this process.},

Semantic Proximity–Results From Lexicographical Experiments},
abstract = {The paper reports a pilot study on the detection of lexical semantic variation in
modern Swedish. The starting point of the study is the meaning descriptions of around 65,000
headwords in ’The Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy’ (SO, 2021) covering
approximately 100,000 different senses. In our work, we aim to explore the potential of the
latest computational methods to discover outdated definitions in SO and update them. For
this, we make use of the DURel tool (Schlechtweg et al., 2018, 2024) which relies on state-
of-the-art language models for the automatic semantic analysis of word usages. The work
resulted in drawing lexicographers’ attention to both main senses and subsenses that should
be added to the dictionary. It has also demonstrated that certain meaning descriptions in SO
are too general and should be split in accordance with the current principles for the semantic
descriptions in the dictionary.},

with reference to the perspectives, traditions and publication year of the dictionaries.
However, some differences are difficult to justify. For this reason, the editorial team

with respect to the information given in the two lexical resources. In this article, I discuss
different types of differences, both motivated and unmotivated, between the dictionaries.

Vidare presenteras preliminära resultat av en undersökning av hur frekventa uppslagsorden i SAOL egentligen är i olika delkorpusar med modern allmänspråklig svenska. För att ordlistan även fortsättningsvis ska kunna användas inom svensk ordforskning, vid språkstudier m.m., men också bli mer central inom språkteknologiska sammanhang, är det avgörande att SAOL:s uppslagsord vilar på vetenskaplig grund, moderna språkteknologiska metoder och uppdaterade korpusmaterial. The main actors in the field, both commercial and non-commercial, are mentioned alongside with the description of lexicographic products that have been offered by them to the lexicon users. of contributors only publish one or two entries. This entails that a large number
of users have contributed to the dictionary. Furthermore, a majority chooses to
focus on dialect words or slang words. Many of these entries are not represented
in traditional Swedish dictionaries. The advantages of having people of different

of controversial words in the development of a new edition of the
Swedish monolingual dictionary Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska
Akademien (SO), which is expected to be published in 2021. The
focus of the article is on the semantic fields of sexual orientation
and gender identity, and the challenges met in the process of developing
a non-discriminatory and descriptively adequate resource.
A more inclusive and updated lemma list is put forward, as well as
revisions of definitions and linguistic examples. The article discusses
usage labels of negatively charged words and explores the role of
links to promote non-discriminatory word choices. Furthermore,
methodological questions are raised, and the role of corpora and
other sources of data is discussed.},

abstract = {Providing lexical information in dictionary entries by cross-referencing between semantically related headwords is very important, both from a reception-oriented and a production-oriented perspective. This study presents a survey of cross-references in a comprehensive monolingual dictionary of Swedish. It discusses cross-referencing in dictionaries in general as well as in the Swedish dictionary, focusing on the following four types of paradigmatic cross-references: SEE, COMPARE, SYNONYM, and OPPOSITE. By using data-visualisation software, the semantic network in the dictionary is overviewed in a new way. Furthermore, errors, gaps as well as other areas of improvement in the dictionary related to cross-referencing are discovered. Moreover, the relationships between the existing cross-references, how they are introduced in the dictionary and the dictionary's intended target groups are addressed. The study also reveals that the traditional lexicographic policies of the dictionary need to be adjusted to take advantage of the transition from paper to electronic publication},

The main focus is on proper names in Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien

I will discuss, among other things, the general principles concerning the prevalence
of proper names in the dictionary. Some of the topics that will be addressed are types
of proper names, where they appear and their representativity (e.g. concerning gender
and ethnicity). As a conclusory remark, I will discuss the possibility of including
proper names in the lemma list of the forthcoming revised edition of the dictionary,

abstract = {In this paper, I explore certain types of semantic variation that recur in 36 Swedish idioms when used in contemporary newspaper material (slightly more than 33.7 million running words). The semantic analysis of the idioms is influenced by studies of lexemes. The idioms are described according to the principle of factor analysis, meaning that I have attempted to differentiate semantic factors that can be considered building blocks in the internal semantic structure constituting the conventionalized meaning of the idioms. Definitions of the expressions were then based on the semantic factors. One type of variation entails the manifestation of a specific semantic factor in certain cases when the idiom is used. Other times, the relevant factor is absent. In a different type of variation, one particular semantic factor is replaced by another. The study reported here should be useful in a variety of ways, including as a basis for comparison between how semantic variation appears in different types of fixed phrases and lexemes. },

abstract = {This article approaches the field of contemporary Swedish dictionary making. By extension, the principal aim of the article is to discuss the future outlook of dictionaries and of lexicography as a whole in Sweden. Firstly, we describe the current state of affairs of lexicography in Sweden in terms of key participants – the institutional agents and financiers. Secondly, we recognize differences in standing (high/low) between various kinds of lexicography and lexicographical resources. On one hand, we find high status, scholarly and professionally produced monolingual dictionaries. On the other hand, we discern low status unsystematic, in some cases unreliable, web dictionaries that are often heavily dependent on user-generated content. In a concluding note, we dare to foresee some challenges concerning the future of Swedish lexicography.},

In this article, we present and discuss the results of a web survey on the use of the app version of the monolingual Svenska Akademiens ordlista (the Swedish Academy Glossary, 13th edition, 2006), henceforth the SAOL.

The results show that the SAOL app is used mostly for checking spelling. A more surprising result, since the SAOL is not a definition dictionary, is that it is also frequently used for checking the meaning of words. For forthcoming versions of the glossary, the users request more definitions. Regarding the app, users wish for improved search functions, such as wildcard (truncated) search and cross references. The current app (of the 13th edition) is free. A majority of the users state that they are willing to pay a small sum for an app version of the 14th edition of the SAOL.},

abstract = {Developing an app version of a printed dictionary is a new challenge faced by lexicographers. Lexicographers involved in the app development process must consider fundamental lexicographic aspects as well as learn to understand technological and usage issues inherent to the new media. An inevitable question is how closely the content and layout can be made to match the printed dictionary while still offering ‘digital’ functionality such as linking, collapsed sections, audio, etc. Only a few reports discussing these issues have so far been published.

The aim of our paper is to further advance the exchange of knowledge and experience by sharing our observations made during the development of a new app corresponding to the comprehensive printed dictionary, Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (the Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy, 2009). The app is the result of close cooperation between the financer The Swedish Academy, lexicographers and system developers at the Department of Swedish, University of Gothenburg and Isolve AB, a Stockholm-based app development agency specializing in dictionary apps.},

abstract = {This article addresses the possibility of linking constructicon resources for different languages, in particular English and Swedish. The entries in Berkeley's English constructicon have been compared to Swedish, with focus on potential correspondences in a Swedish constructicon. In most cases, approximately corresponding Swedish constructions could be established, although typically with minor differences, often concerning grammatical markers. The closest equivalents are, typically, relatively general grammatical constructions, whereas constructions containing specific lexical elements tend to differ more. In order to link all corresponding constructions between the two resources, a combination of strategies seems to be required. Constructions with a referential meaning may be linked via FrameNet frames, while those with a more abstract grammatical function may be related in terms of their grammatical properties.},

abstract = {This paper introduces the Swedish Constructicon (SweCxn), a database of Swedish constructions currently under development. We also present a small study of the treatment of constructions in Swedish (paper) dictionaries, thus illustrating the need for a constructionist approach, and discuss three different methods used to identify potential constructions for inclusion in the constructicon. SweCxn is a freely available electronic resource, with a particular focus on semi-general linguistic patterns of the type that are difficult to account for from a purely lexicographic or a purely grammatical perspective, and which therefore have tended to be neglected in both dictionaries and grammars. Far from being a small set of borderline cases, such constructions are both numerous and common. They are also quite problematic for second language acquisition as well as LT applications. Accordingly, various kinds of multi-word units have received more attention in recent years, not least from a lexicographic perspective. The coverage, however, is only partial, and the productivity of many constructions is hard to capture from a lexical viewpoint. To identify constructions for SweCxn, we use a combination of methods, such as working from existing construction descriptions for Swedish and other languages, applying LT tools to discover recurring patterns in texts, and extrapolating constructional information from dictionaries.

abstract = {After a modest beginning with mostly Latin-Swedish and Latin-Danish glossaries, bilingual Scandinavian lexicography gradually developed in the 17th and especially the 18th century. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the first monolingual Danish and Swedish dictionaries were published – somewhat late in an international perspective. Around 1900, work on monumental historical dictionaries of Swedish and Danish started. A similar Norwegian project started somewhat later. The Danish project was finished after 40 years; the Swedish – more ambitious – project will be finished in a few years. As is well known, the introduction of language corpora revolutionized lexicography. This is particularly true of lexicography in Sweden, where a monolingual corpus-based dictionary was published as early as 1986, one year before the COBUILD dictionary. In Denmark, an excellent corpus, including spoken language, was compiled in the 1990s, forming the basis of a six-volume monolingual dictionary now available on the Internet, with excellent search facilities. Likewise, corpus-based lexicography has enjoyed an increasingly strong position in Norway and Iceland. },

An academic word list exists for English, but no such lists exist for the Nordic languages. Such a list would be an important resource for both L1 and L2 students in their first years of study, a period when many students struggle to cope with the demands of academia. Moreover, the word lists would be of use to students and teachers at the higher levels of secondary education. An inventory of academic words and phrases would also be a useful tool for researchers of academic language use and for test developers. The paper outlines the initial stages of work on an academic word list for Swedish. Three potential research approaches have been explored: the translation of the English list, extracting academic words from existing corpora, and the compilation of parallel academic corpora where an academic word list is extracted from these. The paper will discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the different approaches and the benefits of carrying out a joint project involving several languages. The question of entry selection and the information categories of the dictionary entries and the interplay between the entries in the dictionaries and the corpora will also be briefly addressed.},

The constructicon, which is still in its early stages, is a collection of (partially) schematic multi-word units, constructions, developed as an addition to the Swedish FrameNet (SweFN). SweFN and the constructicon are integrated with other parts of Språkbanken, both lexical resources and corpora, through the lexical resource SALDO. In most respects, the constructicon is modeled on its English counterpart in Berkeley, and, thus, following the FrameNet format. The most striking differencies are the inclusion of so-called collostructional elements and the treatment of semantic roles, which are defined globally instead of locally as in FrameNet. Incorporating subprojects such as developing methods for automatic identification of constructions in authentic text on the one hand, and accounting for constructions problematic for L2 acquisition on the other, the approach is highly cross-disciplinary in nature, combining various theoretical linguistic perspectives on construction grammar with language technology, lexicography, and L2 research.},

title = {A och O om akademiska ord. Om framtagning av en svensk akademisk ordlista},
abstract = {This paper reports on the development of a new electronic Swedish academic word list,
which will be based on a corpus consisting of texts from a wide range of university subject
areas. (Cf. the English Academic Word List, AWL, presented in Coxhead 1998,
2002.) Once finalized, the dictionary and corpus will be publicly available. The aim of
the word list is to provide an indication of important words for university students, in
particular non-native speakers of Swedish. In order to succeed in higher education, the
mastery of an academic vocabulary may be crucial. A closely related study of extraction
of a school-related vocabulary of secondary school textbooks is the OrdiL project (Lindberg
& Johansson Kokkinakis 2008). The Swedish academic word list will be developed
in cooperation with other Nordic countries in a multi-disciplinary project focusing on
language use in Nordic academic settings.},

@book{skoldberg-2004-korten-33614,
title = {Korten på bordet. Innehålls- och uttrycksmässig variation hos svenska idiom},
abstract = {The dissertation recounts how thirty-six Swedish idioms consisting of a verb and complement are used in contemporary newspaper material found in the Bank of Swedish Linguistic Reference Databank of Göteborg University. All the expressions occur at least once per million running words in my corpus of almost 33.7 million running words. The idioms include få kalla fötter (literally: get cold feet) meaning ‘(suddenly) feel strong apprehensions’/concerning a person; due to a particular event or the like; referring to his participation in a particular context/. A fundamental objective is to survey variation in content of the studied idioms. Analyses were performed using semantic roles. The semantic analyses show that many of the idioms demonstrate considerable complexity. It also emerges that slightly more than half of the idioms studied show severely limited semantic variation in the material. The semantic content of the remaining expressions varies more, but none of the idioms can be regarded as polysemous. Many of the idioms are characterized by diffuse borders and a certain vagueness and lack of acuity of meaning. The full meaning of most of the idioms does not emerge until the idioms are put in a context. Therewith, idioms demonstrate clear similarities to ordinary lexemes. Another important question in the dissertation has to do with expressive variation in the relevant idioms. Idioms are traditionally regarded as fixed units that cannot be varied in terms of expression. The dissertation studies variation related to grammatical categories, forms of lexical variation, and construction switches. The expressions show sharply limited variation with respect to number and definiteness, nor does alternation between active and passive construction occur in many idioms. Lexical variation and inserted adjuncts are however relatively common. The expressions studied differ in the material to a varying extent. The variation seems to be connected to some form of compositionality, but perhaps even more to the type of figurative content of the idioms. Obviously metaphorical idioms tend to vary in expression to a greater extent than metonymic (or less palpably metaphorical) expressions. },

	title        = {Lexin - a report from a recycling lexicographic project in the North},
abstract = {In the late 70s, the Swedish Board of Education initiated a project (the Lexin project) aiming at production of dictionaries between Swedish and many immigrant languages. A monolingual Swedish dictionary was compiled, serving as the common base of the bilingual dictionaries. In the 90s, the project was exported to other Nordic countries. Since the Nordic languages are closely related, much of the work carried out in Sweden could be reused in Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. Today, there are many learners’ dictionaries between Nordic languages and ‘exotic’ immigrant languages, especially with Swedish and Norwegian as source languages.

In this paper, we account for some aspects of this – in some respects probably unique – project. At the end, we give a description of the revision and updating of the Swedish database that has been going on since 2008
