Dimitrios Kokkinakis

I am a researcher in language technology and my research interests lie in the areas of Text Mining sometimes called Text Data Mining or Text Analytics (e.g. information extraction, relation and event extraction), corpus linguistics, lexical semantics and building and refining linguistic resources. The years before 2016 I worked mainly in the field of cultural heritage (e.g. with literary texts), but also in the field of medical and health informatics with an emphasis on medical language processing and medical terminologies

A large part of my current research consists of using state-of-the-art language technology methods and tools to be able to develop means to identify early and subtle signs of cognitive impairment. I was the PI of the project ""Linguistic and extra-linguistic parameters for early detection of cognitive impairment"" (2016-2021), the aim of which was to develop language technology methods for extracting, combining, processing, analyzing and interpreting different forms of written and spoken language as well as eye movement measurements during text reading in people in different stages of cognitive impairment and healthy control subjects. In doing so, we wanted to be able to quickly identify significant linguistic (e.g. word choice, mispronunciations, phraseological, grammatical or semantic deviations) and extra- and paralinguistic signals (e.g. pause frequency, variations in speech rhythm, speech rate, intonation and voice volume) that can be used as a supplement to early diagnostics and as a prognostic or screening tool to e.g. be able to distinguish people with mild cognitive symptoms from "normal aging" or from people who are in the early stages of developing brain diseases such as Alzheimer's.

My LinkedIn-profile is here: här and my Semantic Scholar-profile is here: här.

Since 2016, I am a (board) member of AgeCap, the Center for Aging and Health, a research center that explores the capabilities of the elderly. It is led by Prof. Ingmar Skoog, Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. AgeCap is part of Gothenburg University's investments in global challenges, so-called UGOT challenges.

In recent years I have organized four workshops - the workshops are part of a series called "RaPID": RaPID1@LREC: 2016, RaPID2@LREC: 2018, RaPID3@LREC: 2020, RaPID4@LREC: 2022; and a so-called special session (NEURAL2019@ExLing while currently in the planning phase to organize new workshops in the same research area.
